LiDAR Surveying Technology Advantages

LiDAR is a very unique and remote sensing technology that has completely taken over multiple industries. LiDAR stands for light detection and ranging and this technology uses light in the forms for lasers to measure distances and inspection. It is an ideal system for many verticals of business due to the many advantages it has to offer.

Two Types of LiDAR

  1. Topographic: Topographic LIDAR measures distances on land using a near-infrared laser.

  2. Bathymetric: Bathymetric LIDAR measures distances in aquatic environments by using a water-penetrating green light laser. This type of LIDAR is commonly used in civil engineering and roadwork applications that require working with underwater environments, such as under bridges.

How exactly does LiDAR work? By pointing a laser at a target surface on the ground or under the water. Which then reflects the light back to the LIDAR equipment, and the sensor measures the distance traveled. This data is then combined with the position and orientation of the LIDAR equipment. This creates a set of three-dimensional spatial coordinates that include latitude, longitude and height, creating a combination of data that is called a point.

Advantages of Using LiDAR

  1. Speed: this type of technology has the ability to collect a million points of data per second. LiDAR is one of the fastest surveying methods available.

  2. Accuracy: LIDAR systems collect extremely dense data with very little room between points. This means that the results are highly accurate, allowing professionals to plot and model natural and man-made geographies with the level of precision they need to plan detailed projects.

  3. Flexibility: LiDAR data can be collected a number of different ways. From drones, to cars, to helicopters, LiDAR systems can be mounted on a variety of platforms.

  4. Safety: By being mounted on UAVs (drones) allows them to survey dangerous conditions that may not be accessible to humans.
